About Penny

Photo of Penny TerndrupIt’s been said that I’m able to “see round corners” when it comes to my practice.  Aiming to appreciate the bigger picture and anticipate, I truly love working with my clients towards the best outcome possible with a high degree of cultural and organisational intelligence.

If that happens to be a search for the best talent in a tricky area, an exploration of what resourcing is really needed, coaching an individual or a team, or working with someone who wants to make a career move makes no difference. Integrity and investing the effort and time to become part of the team is important to me and I believe that working in this way truly reduces the inherent risk in recruitment and the effectiveness of coaching and consultancy.

While my spiritual home is the legal profession, working regularly with a variety of law firms/organisations and in house legal teams, more recently I’ve enjoyed successful outcomes with training organisations, regulatory bodies, charities, consultancies and private equity businesses to name a few.

After realising that regrettably, a career as an opera singer was unlikely, I trained and qualified as a solicitor in the City, working on a range of corporate and commercial matters. Itchy feet led me to explore the recruitment market (moving once) and an eventual realisation that the law was not for me. But recruitment was. Joining a nascent recruitment company in the legal sector, I was proud to be part of growing that business to a market leader by reputation and learning hands-on how to make a business work especially from a people perspective. In time, I saw that client needs would only be fully addressed by a full search service and I was invited to set up the Professional Services desk of a global executive search firm in 2007. Working with my old clients and new, I was also retained on ELT senior legal roles in business. In 2009 I kicked off on my own account (trading as Hearken) and haven’t looked back.

In my work now, I bring a desire to unpick things and make them work and a love of facilitating others to be their best. I work with only a few projects at any one time and being small, can ensure that there is never any potential for conflict for clients and that good ethics maintained. Please do read our Conflicts & Ethics Policy.

Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to study or work with those who have taught me well. More formal studies and credentials include:

  • Solicitor (non-practising) England & Wales
  • Meyler Campbell Business Coach Programme (accredited by the SRA, EMCC and AC)
  • Certified Coach with the World Association of Business Coaches
  • MBTI Parts I and II, Strengthfinder
